December 31st, 2008

... was almost a spectacular night.

Not as good as December First should have been.

But not all that bad.

Temperatures down around –15c, so moisture is frozen right out of the sky. Hooray for high pressure systems over Iowa and Missouri, I say.

16:45 The sun has just set. Venus is visible to my naked eye slightly to the left, and below the crescent moon. She may not show up in this photo.

16:45 The sun has just set. Venus is visible to my naked eye slightly to the left, and below the crescent moon. She may not show up in this second photo, but she is half-way between the tip of the leftmost branch of the tree.

17:30 Yes, that’s a jet plane landing, bringing people to town to celebrate New Year’s Eve with family and friends. In forty-five minutes the couple have moved from above-the-leftmost-branch to above-the-rightmost-branch.

17:45 and the sky is now dark. It takes but 60 minutes from sunset to darkness in winter time.

17:45 A zoomed shot, slightly shaky.

All I can say is “Roll on June 19th 2009 !”
